Medium 199 (M199 medium) with Hanks' Salts, developed in 1950, is a defined nutritional source for cell cultures. It is suitable for cultivating many cell types, vaccine production, virology, and other in vitro cell culture applications. This formulation of Medium 199 contains Hanks' salts for use without CO2 (0–2%) and is supplemented with L-Glutamine.
When supplemented correctly, the M199 medium has broad species applicability. Liquid media provide basic nutrients for all cell culture applications.
