Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) High Glucose is a widely used standard cell culture medium. It provides basic nutrients for the growth of a variety of mammalian cell lines, especially when supplemented with Fetal Bovine Serum. In the past, DMEM was shown to successfully cultivate primary cells, such as fibroblasts, HUVECs, neurons, smooth muscle cells, or even cell lines, such as HEK-293, HeLa, Cos-7, and PC-12. DMEM comes in various formulations, with component compositions that may differ.

The original formulation of DMEM contains 1.0 g/L. In contrast, DMEM High Glucose has an increased glucose content of 4.5 g/L, is supplemented with L-Glutamine and Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO3), and comes with Sodium Pyruvate. This formulation of DMEM comes with stable glutamine. Stable glutamine (also known as L-Alanyl-L-Glutamine) is a direct substitute for L-glutamine and offers greater stability.
